Garmin GPSMap 62ST
This is one of the top of the range outdoor GPSs from Garmin. Compared to previous products, it comes complete with an inbuilt 100K topo map of the whole of Europe. Although it is fully capable of using OS mapping, it does a superb job using the map supplied with the unit.

The picture above shows a screen shot using satellite imaging (aerial mapping) which is a subscription extra.

First off, GPS reception. Using a new unit from cold I got a 3D fix in 74 seconds indoors, approx 6' from a window in a steel building. Quite impressive.

I also used the "screen shot" feature to take the following captures. Please bear in mind this is using the standard mapping that comes with the unit. No additional map cards were used.

Lets look at the map and zoom in.

Notice the representation of the hills/terrain, looks quite good.

Notice the top text box, it describes the terrain.

Notice when the curser moves, it picks up details, especially the contour lines.

Street level mapping of a local village is superb

These screen caps were taken in my workshop where I cannot get reception, hence the unit is at a default location of Garmin HQ in Kansas. You will notice the text box on each screen also shows a distance figure indicating how far away you are from what you are looking at.

The mapping is "layered", as you zoom in, more detail & features appear, for instance the contour lines arent apparent until you get down to 1 mile resolution.

I have owned quite a few Garmin GPS units over the years, but this is definitely "up there" amongst the best.

I think they are discontinued now. Were about £395 as they were top of the range when I got mine.
Bloody good piece of kit though.

I've gone over to using the Pocket Earth app on my iPhone. I've used it here, Ireland, Spain and Portugal. The mapping is excellent. I'm pretty sure it was free too.

To be honest, I've never deliberately tested that, but think I would have noticed, especially in the middle of nowhere in Portugal and Spain. I'll make a point of finding a place with no O2 signal here and find out though.

That one looks great.

Almost everywhere here is out of range of a network, sadly  So, I got an Oregon (which came mapless) and put free maps on it, which are kind of fine, but then I made the mistake of trying out the maps they have in the shop which have tons more detail and anecdotes/history about places, trails. I really do have to stop looking at the expensive stuff.
