Horseradish! There's an avocado there for scale. We have tomatoes and peppers too, but you wouldn't want to eat them, or even likely be able to pay for them.

Gave it a tweak. Feels like fresh ginger.

I did wonder about the artichokes, but couldn't bothered in the end. Might go back and get a couple. Have a kind of red wine and cheese, prosciutto, olives type of dinner

Did make some tarragon vinegar though

There's masses of asparagas in the shops here just now. Good stuff too, they've picked it while it's still really tender.

Artichokes I can't be bothered with tbh., and I like vegetables. They're like cardoons taste wise I find. I don't like parsnips or coriander though, they both taste soapy to me. That said, parsnip crisps are good.

My daughter has that thing where coriander tastes like soap. It is a shame.

Apparently nearly 80% of northern Europeans have that. It's said to be why coriander wasn't much used. The seeds are fine as a spice though.

Parsnips were only considered fit for pigs. Pastinage we used to call it. Le panais in French, I think, or pastinaca in Italian.
Better if they've been really frosted, but still....parsnips :/

Fine if they don't taste of soap to you.

My husband is very happy to be given a bowl of parsnips and butter and black pepper.
Honestly, if he didn't like them I'd never buy them.

You’re a funny lot up north. I know full well what both coriander and parsnip taste like, but have never tried eating soap. Obviously ymmv. :nod:

Do they taste 'good' to you ? To me coriander leaf tastes like something tainted, and parsnips taste soapy, like washed face with soap as a kid, soapy.
Most unappealing.

Slice parsnips up really thin though, oil hands and rub through the slices, put the slices on a baking sheet and roast in the oven, and they make brilliant crisps :)

I had not heard of this coriander/parsnip thing, yet it makes sense as I find both rather unpalatable in a similar way. I eat all other veg but try to avoid these two.

It has to do with variation on the OR6A2 gene.
Either coriander appeals to you, or it's horrible.

"Variation in the OR6A2 gene has been identified as a likely cause of why some people enjoy the smell and taste of coriander (also known as cilantro)[6] while others have exactly the opposite reaction to the point of repulsion. Depending on ancestry, somewhere between 3% and 21% of the population associate it with unpleasant taste, including a combination of soap and vomit, or say that it is similar to the foul smelling odor emitted by stinkbugs. This is due to the presence of aldehyde chemicals, which are present in soap, various detergents, coriander, several species of stinkbugs and cinnamon."

I used to dislike corriander but I trained my taste buds to like it. I saw a documentary where they taught kids to eat veggies they didn't like by getting them taste them on a regular basis. After a couple of months all the kids chose lots more veggies with their school dinners, broccoli was a favorite. i quite enjoy the stuff now which improved my appreciation of good Indian food.

When I was about three years old I saw a Laurel and Hardy film in which Laurel eats soap in mistake for cheese and blows bubbles for the rest of the day. Having an enquiring mind, I tried eating soap myself. Nearly 80 years later, I can still remember the taste of that soap.

It tastes nothing like parsnips or coriander.

It's a weird thing. I like greenery, I like herbs, I quite like bitter, I eat my weeds :) but coriander leaves are just awful and totally spoil a dish. Curry I haven't made myself is sometimes really gross, and I know now that it's the coriander leaves. Even microwave baby potatoes with herb butter , if they used coriander, it's not good food. Not for me. Funnily enough not for a lot of folks I know too.

Some folks can't eat onions, some folks can't eat peanuts, I'm fine with both and like them fine.
Each to their own.

Warning: surgeon ego post.

On Friday I did the first endoscopic (keyhole) spine surgery in our region. Just got the pics and video off memory stick. The clarity intra-op was much better than the pics saved.




The patient went home a few hours after surgery, pain-free. He's agreed to be a PR case for the health board, consenting to use of images etc. (I've blurred his face a bit anyway, that's not a side-effect.)



As you can see from the pic (post-op), my head has swelled so much I am rivalling Ant or Dec in the slap head stakes.
