I was given both, plus Animal Farm, from a friend who wanted to read the classics but quickly found he couldn't be arsed.

Three Men in a Boat, in which our man attempts to dispose of foul smelling cheeses:

"He threw them into the canal; but had to fish them out again, as the bargemen complained. They said it made them feel quite faint. And, after that, he took them one dark night and left them in the parish mortuary. But the coroner discovered them, and made a fearful fuss.

He said it was a plot to deprive him of his living by waking up the corpses."

Reading a 134 year old book and drinking ten year old brandy is quite a pleasure!

Just finished "Sixteen ways to defend a walled city " apparently not an instruction manual but an entertaining novel. Part way through the second in the trilogy "How to rule an empire and get away with it"

I've picked up a copy of this for my brother in law's Christmas; sounds decent, cheers for the recommendation.

Oh, I listened to that on my travels on Audible, very funny and a good story. Got the second in the series now but not so keen on it so far.

Matter - Iain M Banks

I love these things and have just realized that I am going to keep coming back to them.

Yes, second book was not as good. Had to take a break and read something else but just starting book 3 now

I finished Second Sleep by Robert Harris, and am currently reading Act of Oblivion by Robert Harris.

Also read are: -

Munich by Robert Harris
The Fear Index by Robert Harris

I have some Bernard Cornwell to read and some Clive Cussler. With a week or so off reading I am looking forward to getting back into it.

Because it’s over £250 would be my primary reason not to recommend it

Reading ‘Existence’ by David Brin. AI, Fermi Paradox etc. Not my usual but quite good, very well imagined.
Let me know what you think of it.

I'm into a run of Vietnam books (again) and fancy some fiction.

There's a new series on Crave based on a bunch of Cornwell novels - haven't taken a peek yet. Winter King.
Read the books years ago - cornwells take on an early pagan King Arthur. Not seen the series available here yet.

I've unwittingly joined a book club; nice Pete at work invited me and he's the sort of friendly guy it's hard to say no to, he's a decent bloke but is verging on boring (as nice people often are). I told him I couldn't commit but they're all reading his chosen book for December, HG Wells' The War in the Air, and they meet in one of the alehouses near my house to discuss it so it sounds like a decent night. I was planning to start on The Expanse prior to this but as I don't have time for that I'm tonight reading Alber Camus' The Stranger, which is actually a very compelling but easy read. It won the Nobel prize but I'm half way through and haven't once reached for the dictionary 😅

I have a Collected Poems of R.S Thomas on the go; misery as he was. Plus revisiting Thomas Kinsella's translation of the Táin. Very different to the Mabinogion. I really am getting old, I think.

I have put down Act of Oblivion as a book I put a hold on through BorrowBox became available - Finding Hildasay. It's a story of an ex-squaddy that has depression, and the forthcoming homelessness brings him to the decision that he should walk the coastline of the UK. I am not sure that I can recommend it at the moment. He has certainly gone through the mill in the early part of the book. A dog has now joined him for the walk (woof woof). Perhaps I will warm to the book in the coming chapters.

I will. It’s taking a long time to read, but it’s easier now I’ve got the characters and their threads sorted. It felt a bit random to begin with, but now seems to have developed a solid storyline with chapters doing what they’re supposed to do, continue a characters part in the tale.

Give it a go, it’s different.

I went through the records today and in the last 24 months I've bought 44 books and read 23. TBH not as bad as I was expecting, and eBay has made it quite affordable. But one a month? Geez.
