I'll have to buy a new phone and my current one has a micro sim which I want to keep. Is it safe to do, or is it better to visit a phone repair shop?

I am not sure what settings you mean. In the old days we used to save stuff on the sim but the cloud has made it outdated. Provided your new phone is compatible (at least for iPhone/iPhone) you simply transfer everything you want from your old phone to the new one. I would think the same is possible between 2 Android phones.

I've cut a couple, just use sharp reasonably strong scissors and pare bits off until it fits, it helps if you have micro to nano convertor as a template.

But it's also very easy to get a new one, I'd be surprised if you were still storing your contacts on your SIM in 2023?

Your new phone will have software available for it to hoover all the settings and data from your old one and stick it in for right places.
Don't think anyone still stored anything on the SIM these days.

It's the phone number etc. that I'm wondering about, does that transfer with the rest of the stuff?

Yeah, it's just internet magic, don't worry about it. The old one will stop working and then you put the new one in.

If you’ve got a new contract with new number but want to transfer your existing number over then it can be switched.

If you have a new phone only then you can ask your provider for a new sim of the right size.

Only time I lost all my contacts was when they were sim stored and I screwed up the transfer to sim process.

Just make sure your phone has had a recent cloud back-up so anything new has been saved.
