I will never forget the one of the Dad that took his son for his first day at pre-school. Dad and son came into the school holding hands. The teacher with a big welcoming smile squatted down to chat to little Sam. "And what's your name?" asked the teacher. "Sam" he replies. "and who have you brought with you today Sam?" said the teacher. Sam points up to his Dad and says "this is my dad" thens points to the natural bulge in his Dad's trousers and says, "and this is my Dad's willy".

First cut. It was a bit too long and a bit wet. And yes,I do need a new hobby. All my past hobbies have seemed to disappear. Bushcrafting/ camping / playing out along with mtn biking have gone due to health problems. I!I'm currently on the look out for a bike to just potter on the canal bank to try and get out a bit more. Been out for a walk today but I get bored easily.

Surely after all that mowing you've booked another holiday?

Funny you should mention that. September is Singapore Vietnam Thailand and Cambodia. And for her 60th next April she's just booked us on a 3 week cruise Barbados to Southampton. What a shit life I have.
I predict next April will start well and gradually deteriorate over a 3 week period. just for you.

Aye right? We're in Butlin's for the second time this year, we get home on Friday and go on holiday one week later, averaging more than one holiday per month so far.

A small bottle of Sarson's vinegar is about $4.50 here and a slightly larger sized bottle of regular malt vinegar comes in at something under $2. So, feeling parsimonious, I bought a $2 bottle, popped the lid off the old Sarson's bottle and decanted it.

The difference between Sarson's vinegar and regular malt vinegar is vast. I hope you all know this :)

Also, both white pepper and cumin taste different here, unless you can find the stuff that is destined for the Mexican market; which is cheaper and better.

After almost 30 years of spending about a month a year in the region, I discovered that our place in Charente Maritime produced vinegar. And an excellent one to boot. It’s called Fuchs and unfortunately is not that easy to find. They have a wide range, from run-of-the-mill to premium. The basic stuff is in most shops but usually relegated to the bottom shelf (while quite decent), the top of the range is the hard one. I managed a couple of bottles, wine and cider, and I’ll keep you posted in a couple of months as to how we like it.

I have made vinegar, from cider, kept the Mother going for years, but there's an edge to it that bites somehow. It's very good pickling, but not so tasty drizzled over something, iimmc ? A tad harsh for dipping bread in with oil.

Balsamic vinegar's sweetness appeals, but I made vinegar from over ripe plums, and it was tastier than that by a long way.

It's like coffee. One can get rather fed up of the same stuff all the time. Variety's fun :) even if there are sort of perennial favourites :)

I've managed to get the grass cut this morning. 4 passes with the mower on different lowering levels. And quick enough to get the cuttings in the bin before they got emptied. Winner.
I am dreading cutting ours. The lawn is still waterlogged in places and the grass is already 10" tall in places. Its going to be at least another 2-3 weeks before its dry enough for a mower not to sink in it. I am seriously considering splashing out 30 quid and hiring a 24" Honda petrol mower and blitzing it when its dry.

I always have a few bottles of white wine vinegar with a load of tarragon leaves in it. It is like some secret weapon for fixing things with. When it gets old - like a few years lost at the back of a cupboard - it really shines.

I think my raspberry one is like that. It's sweet though, but it's never cloying or stale.

Tarragon is one of those flavours I can’t get one with. Just reading the words gives me flashbacks to some 25 years ago having a meal at “The Swan” and whatever it was had a tarragon sauce. I couldn’t eat it!

It’s called a Béarnaise sauce and is usually served with grilled meat.

It is however usually served aside, as it can split easily (like a Hollandaise, very similar but without the tarragon)
